Owen Kiely, Wesleyan University

Owen Kiely excelled in cross country and track at Wesleyan with his greatest achievements coming in the fall of 2005.

After capturing a New England Division III cross-country title and being named New England Division III Runner of the Year by the national coaches association, Kiely went on to place 12th at the NCAA Division III Cross-Country Championship to gain All-America honors. The previous spring, Kiely got his first taste of national competition when he qualified for the NCAAs in outdoor track and finished ninth nationally in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, missing All-American laurels by one place. His outstanding performance as the Cardinals' top runner in cross country during 2005 helped Wesleyan qualify as a team for the NCAAs for the first time and place 14th of 24 squads.

Wesleyan had placed second of 43 teams in the New England Division III meet, equaling the team's best ever effort in that event, to gain a spot in the national field. Kiely received the male Roger Maynard Memorial Award from Wesleyan as the college's top scholar-athlete, was named a first-team District I CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American for cross-country/track and went on to gain third-team Academic All-America honors nationally from CoSIDA. Continuing his studies as a neuroscience & behavior major as a graduate student in 2006-07, Kiely hopes to compete in track a final year as injury prevented him from finishing his indoor campaign or participate at all outdoors in 2005-06.
