Tom Milaschewski, Colby College

Tom Milaschewski’s decision to accept a teaching position with Teach for America for the new school year should not be much of a surprise. He made a habit of giving back to Colby College during his four years.

Milaschewski was good enough athletically to earn All-NESCAC honors for men’s soccer. However, he was much more than just a soccer player. Milaschewski, a double major in Spanish and international studies, was the Student Chair of the Colby Athletic Advisory Committee, was the men’s soccer representative for SAAC, and helped out his fellow students and professors as a tutor in Spanish and as a research assistant for a statistics professor.

Away from Colby, Milaschewski started the Church in the Cove Summer Youth Program for children to give them the opportunity to play typical neighborhood games in a safe and monitored environment. He started the program in 2005 with five children and grew the attendance to more than 50 over the past four years as the program director.

Milaschewski, who is from Beverly, Mass., was a two-time NESCAC Fall All-Academic selection and was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-East Region Scholar honorable mention team in 2008. He studied abroad during his time at Colby in the “Duke in the Andes” program through Duke University. Milaschewski spent a semester studying and living with a host family in Quito, Ecuador.

On the field, Milaschewski was a two-year captain and made the All-NESCAC second team in 2008 as a defender. He was the Colby team most valuable player this past season and was selected to play in the NEISL Senior All-Star Classic.
