2002 Football Players of the Week

November 10, 2002
Offensive Player of the Week:
J.P. Zito, Amherst
(Senior, WR - Coral Gables, Fla.)
Zito posted a career-high seven catches for 179 yards, with touchdown strikes of 33, three and 69 yards from sophomore quarterback Marsh Moseley, to lead the Jeffs to a 45-35 win over previously unbeaten Williams.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Jamie Creed, Trinity
(Junior, DE - Valley Forge, Pa.)
Creed had nine tackles (seven solo), two sacks, two pressures, and forced a fumble. The Bantam pass rush produced six sacks and held Wesleyan to 57 rushing yards on 28 carries.

Rookie of the Week:
Ngai Otieno, Amhesrt
(Freshman, RB - Gloucester, Mass.)
First-year tailback Otieno came out of nowhere to rush for 97 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, many of which served to wear down an embattled Williams defense late in the fourth quarter.

November 3, 2002
Offensive Player of the Week:
Sean Atkins, Bates
(Senior, RB - New York, N.Y.)
Atkins had 38 carries for a career-high 298 yards and seven touchdowns (both school records) in Bates' 48-28 win over Bowdoin. Atkins' seven rushing touchdown set a new NESCAC record. His 298 yards are the second-most this season in NCAA Division III and were five short of the NESCAC single game record.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Wesley Connors, Williams
(Sophomore, LB - Pacific Grove, Calif.)
Connors tallied 13 tackles on the day and forced 2 fumbles. Of this 13 tackles, 7 were for loss including 4 sacks for a loss of 33 yards as the Ephs handed Wesleyan their second loss, 41-7.
Rookie of the Week:
Patrick Magoon, Tufts
(Freshman, DB - South Easton, Mass.)
Magoon finished with 10 tackles and a blocked field goal. The block came early in the third quarter as Colby and Tufts battled in a 9-0 game led by the Mules.

October 27, 2002
Offensive Player of the Week:
Aaron Stepka, Colby
(Soph., RB - Farmington, Conn.)
Stepka rushed for a collegiate-high 230 yards on 43 carries and had two touchdown runs against Bates on Saturday. Stepka rushed for more than 200 yards for the second time this year. The sophomore had scoring runs of 13 and two yards and now has eight touchdowns this season.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Mark Tilki, Tufts
(Junior, DB - Derby, Conn.)
Tilki posted four tackles, an interception and recovered two Amherst fumbles, one for the games first touchdown, in a 24-27 overtime loss. Tilki also returned a punt 42 yards to the Amherst 7-yard line putting Tufts on top 24-10.

Rookie of the Week:
Michael Blair, Trinity
(Freshman, NT - Plymouth, N.H.)
Blair helped Trinity hold Middlebury to 49 rushing yards and two yards per carry with a team-high four tackles and two tackles for losses, along with a pass breakup.

October 20, 2002
Offensive Player of the Week:
Pat Conley, Colby
(Senior, QB - Bath, Maine)
Conley accounted for 22 of Colby's 29 points in a 29-7 win over Hamilton on Saturday. The senior quarterback had touchdown passes of 6 and 5 yards, a 7-yard touchdown run and while holding for the snap on an extra point attempt, Conley tucked the ball in and ran in for a two-point conversion as well. He was 13-for-23 through the air for 165 yards.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Jeremy Carroll, Amherst
(Senior, FS - Winchester, Mass.)
Torched Wesleyan for a trio of interceptions and a 33-yard touchdown return in Saturday's 14-13 loss at Wesleyan. The senior leads the conference with seven interceptions.

Rookie of the Week:
Quincy Francis, Wesleyan
(Sophomore, LB - Westbrook, Conn.)
Francis, who sat out all last year with an injury, was all over the field with 18 total tackles, 12 solo and six assisted. He leads Wesleyan, and the conference, in tackles this year with 60.

October 13, 2002
Co-Offensive Players of the Week:
Fletcher Ladd, Amherst
(Junior, RB - Amherst, N.H.)
Ladd rushed for a career-high 208 yards on 35 carries, including a five-yard touchdown run, as Amherst improved to 4-0 with a 14-0 win over Colby.

Tim Crawley, Williams
(Sophomore RB - Cottage Grove, Ore.)
Crawley came off the bench to carry the ball 13 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns including the game winner with 53 seconds left in the fourth quarter. His scores were on runs of 3 yards and 5 yards.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Danny Ackil, Wesleyan
(Junior, DB - Canton, Mass.)
Ackil scored the games first touchdown on a 16-yard interception return on the games third play from scrimmage. Ackil added another interception, five tackles and two pass breakups.

Rookie of the Week:
Pat Curran, Wesleyan
(Freshman, RB - Las Vegas, Nev.)
Curran had a consistent day in the backfield with 19 carries for 67 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard burst in the third-quarter.

October 6, 2002
Offensive Player of the Week:
Aaron Stepka, Colby
(Sophomore, RB - Farmington, Conn.)
Stepka rushed for a collegiate high 217 yards on 42 carries and had three touchdowns in Colby's 27-19 win over previously unbeaten Wesleyan.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Jeremy Carroll, Amherst
(Senior, FS - Winchester, Mass.)
Carroll finished with nine tackles, including seven solos, and had two key interceptions in the third quarter, the second of which led to the game-winning touchdown in Amherst's 17-10 win at Middlebury.

Rookie of the Week:
Brian Duggan, Bowdoin
(First Year, LB - Danvers, Mass.)
First-year linebacker had five solo tackles, and two fumble recoveries for the Polar Bear defense against Tufts

September 29, 2002
Offensive Player of the Week:
Bill Lazzaro, Middlebury
(Senior, RB - Manlius, N.Y.)
Lazzaro anchored the Middlebury attack with 33 rushes for 155 yards including a 10-yard touchdown run in 17-14 win over Colby.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Michael Salvatore, Amherst
(Sophomore, LB - Greenwich, Conn.)
Salvatore recorded a game-high 17 tackles, including seven solo stops, an interception and one of five Amherst sacks in a 42-20 victory over Bowdoin.

Rookie of the Week:
Brad Davis, Trinity
(Freshman, RB - Marlborough, N.H.)
Davis had nine carries for 157 yards including an 85-yard touchdown in a 13-30 loss to Williams.

September 22, 2002
Offensive Player of the Week:
Pat Moffett, Wesleyan
(Junior, WR - Norwalk, Conn.)
Moffett pulled in six catches for 194 yards and two touchdowns as Wesleyan defeated Middlebury 24-21. Moffett tied a school record on the second play from scrimmage with a 90-yard touchdown catch.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Evan Zupancic, Tufts
(Senior, CB - Lake Oswego, Ore.)
Zupancic intercepted two passes to tie a school record with 15 career interceptions. The senior contributed three tackles and two passes defended in the 20-0 defeat of Hamilton.
