HADLEY, Mass. - Amhersts bid to repeat as national champions fell short during the final weekend of the 2008 NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament in Salem, Va. The Lord Jeffs advanced to the title game with an 84-58 win over Ursinus in the semifinals on Friday, but fell to Washington-St. Louis on Saturday by a 90-68 score.
HADLEY, Mass. - Amherst advanced to the semifinals of the 2008 NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament with a pair of wins over the weekend, taking Richard Stockton 85-77 on Friday and Brandeis 65-55 on Saturday. It is the third year in a row that the defending NCAA champion Lord Jeffs have reached the national semifinals.
HADLEY, Mass. - Amherst was the only NESCAC team to survive the first weekend of the 2008 NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament. The defending NCAA champ Lord Jeffs handed John Jay a 96-74 decision on Saturday in the second round, as senior guard Andrew Olson (San Diego, Calif.), the 2008 NESCAC Player of the Year, had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Amherst will now face Richard Stockton (22-6) in this weekends sectional round hosted by Plattsburgh St.
HADLEY, Mass. - Trinity senior guard Patrick Hasiuk (Enfield, Conn.) came away with NESCAC Players of the Week honors for March 3, 2008. Hasiuk helped his Bantams win the 2008 NESCAC Mens Basketball Championship at Amherst over the weekend, the first NESCAC title in program history for Trinity. Hasiuk averaged 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals through the semifinals and the championship, shooting 50 percent from the floor (13-for-26) and from beyond the arc (7-for-14).
HADLEY, Mass. - Bowdoin senior guard Andrew Hippert (Worcester, Mass.) came away with NESCAC Player of the Week honors for Feb. 25, 2008. Hippert scored a season-high 28 points as he helped his Polar Bears record their first win in tournament history during the quarterfinals of the 2008 NESCAC Mens Basketball Championship on Saturday. The win was also the 20th of the season for the Polar Bears, a program record.
HADLEY, Mass. - Colby sophomore forward Adam Choice (Newport, R.I.) came away with NESCAC Player of the Week honors for Feb. 18, 2008. Choice averaged 22.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and shot 62 percent (16-for-26) from the floor and 86 percent (12-for-14) from the foul line to help the Mules go 2-0 in NESCAC action last week and secure a spot in the 2008 NESCAC Mens Basketball Championship.
HADLEY, Mass. - Middlebury junior forward Aaron Smith (West Hartford, Conn.) was named NESCAC Player of the Week for Feb. 11, 2008. Smith averaged 18.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game while shooting 53.7 percent from the floor (22-for-41) during a 2-1 week for the Panthers. Smith had a game-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in a victory at Bates on Saturday to finish off an impressive week.
HADLEY, Mass. - Amherst senior forward Fletcher Walters (Ann Arbor, Mich.) earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors for Feb. 4, 2008. Walters helped his team to two key NESCAC victories over the weekend, averaging 19.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while hitting 57.1 percent (12-for-21) of his shots. After recording his fifth double-double of the season on Friday with 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 72-66 win over Colby, Walters poured in a career-high 26 points on 8-of-11 shooting and contributed nine rebounds in an 85-79 victory over Bowdoin.
HADLEY, Mass. - Bates senior guard Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) came away with NESCAC Player of the Week honors for Jan. 28, 2008. Wholey led the Bobcats to a 2-0 road week, averaging 22.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game while averaging 39.0 minutes per game. Wholey tied his career-high in scoring which he set last year against Tufts by pouring in a game-high 28 points in a 72-68 overtime victory over the Jumbos on Saturday afternoon.
HADLEY, Mass. - Trinity senior guard Patrick Hasiuk (Enfield, Conn.) was named NESCAC Player of the Week for Jan. 21, 2008. Hasiuk averaged 16.0 points and 5.7 assists during a 3-0 week for the Bantams. Hasiuk finished the week shooting 50 percent from the field (15-for-30), going 9-for-18 from behind the arc, and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the foul line. He also posted an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.12.
HADLEY, Mass. - Amherst senior forward Fletcher Walters (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Tufts junior forward Jon Pierce (Belmont, Mass.) were named NESCAC Co-Players of the Week for Jan. 14, 2008. Walters averaged 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds during two non-conference victories over NESCAC foes. Pierce averaged 30.5 points over two victories for Tufts last week, scoring 34 points at UMass Boston and 27 at Wheaton.
