LEWISTON, Maine - Bates College Director of Athletics Jason Fein announced Friday the hiring of Henry Fall to serve as the head coach of the Bates women's and men's golf teams.

"We are delighted to welcome Henry to Bates," Fein said. "His experience as a highly competitive student-athlete, as well as his teaching experience make him a superb fit to lead the Bobcats on the golf course."

Fall was a four-year starter on the Elms College varsity golf team, graduating in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and a minor in Chemistry. He was a two-year captain and led the Blazers to New England Collegiate Conference titles as a first-year and as a senior. In his senior season, the Blazers qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history. Fall also excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-Conference honors every year.

"We frequently played against NESCAC schools during my four years at Elms and I always admired the way in which these teams carried themselves; there was clear excellence to their programs," Fall said. "It is this pursuit of excellence and the opportunity to coach that excites me most about leading the Bobcats."

Since graduating from Elms, Fall has served as an Assistant Golf Professional at Sugarloaf Golf Club and most recently at Bath Golf Club.

"Coaching, playing, and growing the game of golf is my true passion," Fall said. "When I first heard about this position from my former golf coach at Elms, I was intrigued. There is a lot of opportunity for growth at Bates."

A Mainer and 2010 graduate of Mt. Ararat High School, Fall is originally from Harpswell and currently makes his home in Brunswick.

Fall replaces fellow Mainer James Upham, who has been running the day-to-day operations of the golf teams since the passing of legendary head coach Bob Flynn in 2016. Flynn led the Bates golf program for a total of 19 seasons. Upham remains on the Bates staff as the assistant Nordic skiing coach, a position he's held since 2014-15.

"It's a new day for Bates golf and we are excited to have Henry help lead the way," Fein said. "I want to take a moment to thank Coach Upham for all he did and continues to do for our program. I'm so glad he is continuing on with our Nordic Ski program."

The Bates golf teams begin their respective seasons Saturday, September 7th at the Bowdoin Invitational, held at Brunswick Golf Club.
