In a rematch of the regular season finale that saw Middlebury post a 2-0 victory, the Ephs earned four corner kicks within the first three minutes of the match. Forward Demian Gass, in his first game back from an injury that sidelined him for over a month, was strong in his limited playing time, recording two dangerous shots that required tough saves from Middlebury goalie Matthew Hyer.
The Ephs backline of Scatt McDonald, Sean Dory, and Andrew Mathew helped limit Middlebury to two shots in the first half, one of which was blocked.
The match was paused for 90 additional minutes during halftime due to lightning. When play resumed, McDonald struck a free kick that found the foot of Eric Hirsch, who fired a shot at Hyer. However, the wet ball slipped through Hyer's hands and into the net for the first and only goal of the match in the 57th minute. The Ephs were able to hold off the Panthers over the final 30 minutes.
Williams netminder Aaron Schein posted a clean sheet without having to make a save, while Hyer was credited with four stops for Middlebury.
Williams advances to the NESCAC Semifinals. The Ephs' opponent is currently undetermined but will be known after Sunday's remaining quarterfinal matches. Check out NESCAC.com for more information.
