HADLEY, Mass. - Bates won the women's grand final, while the Bates men were third at the 2015 ECAC-National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) on Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. By finishing as the top team from the NESCAC, the Bobcat women won successfully defended their NESCAC Rowing Championship, while the Bobcat men collected the first NESCAC rowing title in program history.
In the women's grand final, Bates crossed the finish in a time of 7:20.155, more than three seconds faster than second-place finisher and NESCAC rival Williams (7:23.665). Trinity finished just behind the Ephs with a time of 7:24.007, while Hamilton and Tufts placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 7:34.596 and 7:36.321.
The Bates men continued to perform well this spring, turning in a time of 6:28.404 behind only Hobart and Michigan to secure the Bobcats' first NESCAC title. Williams, which had won the six previous conference crowns, posted a time of 6:32.877 to finish fourth. Wesleyan was the only other NESCAC institution competing in the grand final, and placed sixth with a time of 6:35.738.
The Bates women's rowing team will receive an automatic invitation to the NCAA rowing championships at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, California May 29-30. Williams, Trinity, Hamilton and Tufts will look for at-large bids following their performances on Sunday.
