HADLEY, Mass. - Williams won the women's grand final, while the Williams men were third at the 2016 National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) on Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. By finishing as the top team from the NESCAC, the Eph men captured their eighth overall title, while the Eph women claimed their tenth overall trophy.
In the women's grand final, Williams crossed the finish in a time of 7:19.183, nearly two seconds faster than second-place finisher and defending NESCAC Champion Bates (7:21.1.73). Wesleyan finished more than three seconds behind the Bobcats with a time of 7:24.634, while Trinity placed sixth (7:34.165).
The Williams men posted a time of 6:24.783 behind only Michigan and Hobart to secure the Ephs' seventh NESCAC title in eight years. Wesleyan turned in a time of 6:25.553 to finish fourth, while Bates, which entered the race as the defending NESCAC Champion, placed fifth with a time of 6:26.757.
The Williams women's rowing team will receive an automatic invitation to the NCAA rowing championships at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, California May 27-29. Williams, Bates, Wesleyan and Trinity will look for at-large bids following their performances on Sunday.
