HADLEY, Mass. - Bates won the women's grand final, while the Bates men were second at the 2017 National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) on Friday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. By finishing as the top team from the NESCAC, the Bobcat men captured their second overall title, while the Bobcat women claimed their third overall trophy.
In the women's grand final, Bates narrowly beat out defending champion Williams. The Bobcats crossed the finish line in a time of 6:45.422, while the Ephs clocked in at 6:45.823 for second place. Tufts was third among NESCAC teams and fifth overall (6:55.290) and Wesleyan rounded out the field (6:57.632).
The Bates men posted a time of 6:01.363 behind only Hobart to secure the Bobcats' second NESCAC title in three years. Williams, the defending NESCAC Champion, turned in a time of 6:07.479 to finish fourth, while Tufts placed fifth with a time of 6:11.668.
The Bates women's rowing team will receive an automatic invitation to the NCAA rowing championships at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J., May 26-28.
