HADLEY, Mass. - The Bates men's and women's rowing teams each won the varsity eight grand final races at the National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) on Friday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. By finishing as the top team from the NESCAC, both teams won the NESCAC Championship for the second straight year. The Bobcat men captured their third overall title, while the Bobcat women claimed their fourth overall trophy.
In the women's grand final, the Bobcats crossed the finish line in a time of 6:24.113. Wesleyan (6:30.885) was second among NESCAC teams, while Tufts (6:35.000) and Williams (6:35.171) rounded out the field.
The Bates men won the grand final with a time of 5:41.384 to secure the Bobcats' third NESCAC title in four years. Williams, turned in a time of 5:52.664 to finish fifth.
The Bates women's rowing team will receive an automatic invitation to the NCAA Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, May 25-27.
