CLINTON, N.Y. - Hamilton, Bates and Wesleyan were all winners in the first round of the 2018 NESCAC Women's Squash Championship at Hamilton College's Little Squash Center on Friday night.
Bates (8-6 overall) breezed to a 9-0 win against Bowdoin as eight of the nine matches were decided in three games. The sixth-seeded Bobcats have won six of their last seven matches and defeated the Polar Bears 7-2 in the season opener. Bowdoin (5-10), which is the 11th seed for the first time, are 0-5 against Bates in NESCAC Championship play. The Bobcats move on to face No. 3 seed Middlebury in a quarterfinal on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. while the Polar Bears take on Colby in the consolation round robin at Colgate on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Wesleyan (9-9) is in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2014 after a 9-0 victory against Connecticut College. The result wasn't as easy as it seemed as four matches were extended to five games. The seventh-seeded Cardinals, who defeated the Camels by a 9-0 count for the third time this season, matched the best seed they have earned for the NESCAC Championship. Wesleyan improved its record to 7-1 against Connecticut College in the NESCAC Championship series. The 10th-seeded Camels (7-9) had their win streak end at three matches. The Cardinals play No. 2 seed Williams in a quarterfinal on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Connecticut College meets up with Colby in the consolation round robin at Colgate on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Hamilton (7-6) posted a 7-2 triumph against Colby for the Continentals' fifth win in their last six matches. Eighth-seeded Hamilton prevailed in each of the bottom six positions on the ladder and evened its record against the Mules at 3-3 in NESCAC Championship history. The Continentals defeated the No. 9 seed Mules 6-3 at Amherst back on Jan. 20. Hamilton plays top-seeded Trinity on Saturday at 11 a.m. while Colby (7-10) drops into the consolation round robin where the Mules will play Connecticut College followed by Bowdoin at Colgate on Saturday.
The other quarterfinal pits fourth-seeded Amherst against fifth-seeded Tufts on Saturday at 11 a.m.
