NESCAC Track & Field Championships Head to Trinity

HADLEY, Mass. - Trinity College will host the 2018 NESCAC Men’s & Women’s Track & Field Championships on Saturday, April 28 at Jessee/Miller Field in Hartford, Connecticut. Competition gets underway at 9 a.m. with several field events and the women’s 10,000-meter run.

In 2017, the Williams men’s and women’s squads defended their NESCAC titles, earning their second and fourth straight crowns, respectively. On the men’s side, the Ephs compiled 175 points to edge Tufts (164). Bowdoin was third (110), followed by Middlebury (102.5) and Bates (102) in fourth and fifth, respectively. For the women, the Ephs earned 239.83 points. Bates was the runner-up with 107 points, while Middlebury (97.66), Colby (69) and Bowdoin (68) rounded out the top five teams.

In 2018, defending champions in 17 individual events return to the field, including four athletes who are seeking their third straight titles in field events. Bates senior Adedire Fakorede (Newark, N.J.) is the two-time defending champion in the men’s discus, while Bowdoin senior Brian Greenberg (Slingerlands, N.Y.) is looking to capture his third title in the triple jump. Tufts senior Stefan Duvivier (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) seeks his third straight high jump crown and Williams senior Helene Hall (Irvington, N.Y.) is the two-time defending champion in the women’s high jump.

In the distance events, Middlebury junior Harrison Knowlton (Turner, Maine) (31:07.57) and first-year Matt D’Aquila (Wynnewood, Pa.) (31:27.16) are two of the top contenders to claim this year’s men’s 10,000-meter title. Tufts senior Brittany Bowman (Camden, Maine) returns to defend her title in the women’s race and has a league-best time of 34:51.07 this season. There will be new faces at the top of the podium in both the men’s and women’s 5,000-meter races following the graduation of last year’s champions. Williams senior Ben Decker (Yarmouth, Maine) posted the best time in the conference on April 20 at 14:36.75 to lead the men’s contenders, while Bowman leads the women with a time of 16:42.30. In the 1,500-meter race, Tufts junior Colin Raposo (Burlington, Mass.) (3:57.17) has the top time in the NESCAC on the men’s side, while Bowdoin senior Sarah Kelley (Winnetka, Ill.) recorded the conference’s best mark in the women’s event (4:37.62) last weekend. Junior Scott Mason (Wyndmoor, Pa.) of Connecticut College owns the best time in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase at 9:04.06. Williams seniors Victoria Kingham (New York, N.Y.) and Emily Sundquist (Salt Lake City, Utah) will challenge each other for the women’s title. Kingham owns a top time of 10:52.44, while Sundquist’s best mark comes in at 10:52.59.

Juniors Anthony Kardonsky (Tenafly, N.Y.) of Tufts and Kennedy Green (Los Angeles, Calif.) of Williams are the men’s and women’s defending champions in the 100-meter dash, respectively, but will face strong competition from Hamilton senior Eli Saucier (Douglasville, Ga.) (10.69) and Colby junior Sophie Stokes Cerkvenik (Britt, Minn.) (12.18). Both currently own the top marks this season on the respective 100-meter performance lists. Saucier is also the defending champion in the 200 meters and has the second-best mark this season (21.78) behind Middlebury sophomore Nicholas Hendrix (East Molesey, United Kingdom) (21.54). Hamilton junior Catherine Berry (Mansfield, Ohio) posted the top time in the women’s 200 meters this season at 25.08 and was the runner-up in 2017. Middlebury junior Jimmy Martinez (Maplewood, N.J.) leads the men’s 400-meter competitors, owning a top time of 47.78. Williams senior Tobias Mueller (Burlington, Vt.), the runner-up in the event last season, returns to the field and has a top-three time of 49.03 this year. Sophomore Megan Powell (Washington, D.C.) of Williams is seeking her second straight title in the women’s 400-meters but will be challenged by Middlebury senior Kate McCluskey (Westford, Mass.), who has crossed the finish line in a conference-best time of 56.18 this year. The Middlebury duo of senior Kevin Serrao (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) and sophomore Anna Willig (Phoenixville, Pa.) lead the field in the men’s and women’s 800-meter races, respectively. Serrao has a time of 1:51.96, while Willig has registered a time of 2:12.73.

Tufts junior Josh Etkind (New City, N.Y.) set a new NESCAC record (14.53) last year to capture the conference title in the 110-meter hurdles. He has the second-best mark this season (14.86) and will be challenged by Bowdoin junior Joseph Staudt (North Andover, Mass.), who put up a time of 14.81 on April 21. Colby’s Stokes Cerkvenik owns the best time in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at 14.51. Tufts senior Andrew DiMaiti (Medford, Mass.) won the men’s 400-meter hurdles last season and enters the 2018 championship with a leading time of 52.95, while Williams senior Kayley McGonagle (Natick, Mass.) captured the women’s title last year and has the second-best time in 2018 (1:02.01). She will be pushed by classmate Kate Kennedy (London, England), who owns the top time in the event this spring at 1:01.65.

In the throws, defending champions return to the field in five of the eight events. Bates junior Tyler Harrington (Haverhill, Mass.) looks to claim his second straight title in the men’s javelin, currently owning the top mark this season (54.52m). Middlebury senior Devon Player (Phoenixville, Pa.) is the defending champion in the women’s javelin and has one of the top three throws of the year at 38.44m. She will face competition from Connecticut College senior Aly Saperstein (Simsbury, Conn.) (40.19m) and Tufts sophomore Julia Kissel (Ramsey, N.J.) (39.81m) who enter the event ranked 1-2. Bates senior Adedire Fakorede (Newark, N.J.) has the top mark in the men’s discus (49.18m), and is going for his third straight championship, while Connecticut College teammates Emily Senatore (Norwell, Mass.), a junior, (41.80m) and sophomore Koko Mensah (Orange, N.J.) (40.10m) will vie for the women’s discus title. Fakorede also owns the top mark in the men’s shot put (15.50m), while Mensah leads the women’s field (13.52m) and looks to defend her title. Fakorede could sweep the NESCAC men’s throwing events as he is also the defending champion in the hammer throw and owns the top mark in the conference this year (56.27m). Hamilton senior Emily Hull (New Hartford, N.Y.), the 2017 NESCAC Runner-up, owns the best mark in the women’s hammer competition (46.29m) heading into the championship.

Tufts senior Stefan Duvivier (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) goes for his third straight title in the men’s high jump. He owns the top height of 1.98 meters which is the mark that has won each of the past three NESCAC titles. Williams senior Helene Hall (Irvington, N.Y.) is also seeking a three-peat in the women’s high jump. She has the second-best mark of the season (1.64m), while teammate Emma Egan (Yarmouth, Maine), a sophomore, has cleared a top height of 1.73 meters. Bowdoin senior Brian Greenberg (Slingerlands, N.Y.), the two-time defending champion in the men’s triple jump, owns a mark of 14.21 meters which leads the NESCAC this season, while Colby sophomore James Gibson (Solon, Ohio) has a mark of 7.21 meters to lead the men’s long jump field. On the women’s side, Williams first-year Isabelle Ith (Petersburg, Alaska) owns the best mark in the conference in both the long jump (5.67m) and triple jump (11.43m). Middlebury junior John Natalone (Dix Hills, N.Y.) won the men’s pole vault in 2017 and returns to the field this season. He has posted a height of 4.55 meters, trailing the top mark of 4.57 meters set by Wesleyan junior Andrew McCracken (Topsham, Maine) this season. Junior Maggie Murphy (New Cumberland, Pa.) of Williams has the best height in the women’s pole vault at 3.55 meters, but 2016 champion Kreager Taber (Raleigh, N.C.), a junior from Middlebury, is in the field and has posted a mark of 3.40 meters this season.

In the men’s relays, Colby, Middlebury, and Williams took home first place in the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 events last season and all three teams have the top times in the respective events heading into the 2018 championships. Colby (42.59) and Williams (8:08.68) look to win their second straight titles in the 4x100 and 4x800, while the Panthers (3:18.51) seek their third straight crown in the 4x400 race. Williams won the 4x400 and 4x800 women’s relay races in 2017 and have the top times in both events this year at 3:51.26 and 9:33.15, respectively. Trinity has posted the fastest time in the 4x100 race this season at 47.85.
