Last season at Trinity, the Middlebury men captured their first NESCAC title recording 14 top-three finishes, including two winning relay performances and individual first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash and the 1,500-meter run. The Panthers recorded 172 points, 32 points better than second-place Williams (140) and 35 points ahead of third-place Tufts (137).

The Williams women won their fifth-straight NESCAC Championship and 25th overall last season behind first-place performances in six individual events and 15 top-three finishes overall. The Ephs registered 200 points, while Tufts (115.5 points) and Middlebury (96.5 points) placed second and third, respectively.

A total of 15 individual defending champions return in 2019, including five athletes in the men’s and women’s sprint competitions. Middlebury’s Nicholas Hendrix (East Molesey, United Kingdom) is the reigning champion in the men’s 100-meter dash, but three runners led by Tufts’ Anthony Kardonsky (Tenafly, N.J.), the 2017 NESCAC Champion, are tied for the top time in the event this season (10.96). Williams’ Kennedy Green (Los Angeles, Calif.) has won the women’s 100-meter title in back-to-back years and is tied with Brittney McKinley (Atascadero, Calif.) of Bowdoin for the top time this year (12.36). In the men’s 200-meter race, Hendrix (21.92) and fellow Panther Jimmy Martinez (Maplewood, N.J.) (21.90) finished second and third, respectively, last year and both rank among the top three times this season. Henry Bruen (Kansas City, Mo.) of Amherst has posted the top time in the event at 21.77. Hamilton’s Cat Berry (Mansfield, Ohio) is the defending champion in the women’s 200-meters and has the second-best time this season (25.38) behind Trinity’s Morgan Hallow (Charlotte, N.C.) (25.33). Martinez, who captured first place in the men’s 400-meter race last year, owns the top time heading into the championship at 48.78. Hallow finished third last year in the women’s 400-meters and owns the second-best time this season (57.48), trailing Berry’s time of 57.31. Amherst’s Kristian Sogaard (Ridgefield, Conn.), the two-time defending champion in the men’s 800-meters, aims to defend his title. However, Lucas Wright (Severna Park, Md.) of Hamilton (1:52.27), Nathan Hill (Hinsdale, Ill.) of Middlebury (1:53.53) and Aidan Ryan (New York, N.Y.) of Williams (1:53.81) have the best times in the event this season. Williams’ Anna Passannante (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Ayden Eickhoff (Corvallis, Mont.) of Bates finished second and third, respectively, last year in the women’s 800-meters. Passannante holds the best time in the event this season (2:11.87) while Eickhoff claimed the title in 2017.

In the distance events, only one champion from last year is back in the field. Trinity’s Ace McAlister (Great Barrington, Mass.) won the men’s 5,000-meter race last year on his home track, but Connecticut College’s Danny Aschale (Cambridge, Mass.) leads the runners in the event with a top time of 14:40.92. Audrey Rustad (Boise, Idaho) of Williams placed third in the women’s 5,000-meters in 2018 and owns the third-best time this year (17:36.22). Amherst’s Christina Scartelli (Bethlehem, Pa.) paces the runners in the event with a time of 17:13.38. Williams’ Ryan leads the field in the men’s 1,500-meters with a time of 3:50.86 this season, while fellow Eph Passannante owns the top women’s time (4:33.19). Middlebury’s Abigail Nadler (Chicago, Ill.), the 2016 champion, has the second-best time this season at 4:33.81. Bryce Murdick (Sandwich, N.H.) of Hamilton is the top runner in the men’s 10,000-meters this season, posting a time of 31:23.26. The winner of the event over the last three years has clocked in at just over 30 minutes. Williams’ Emma Hermann (Northville, Minn.) was the women’s 10,000-meter runner-up in 2018 and owns the best time in 2019 (35:52.46) heading into the NESCAC Championships. Wesleyan’s Kevin McMorrow (Wingdale, N.Y.) narrowly leads the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase field with a time of 9:19.71. Middlebury’s Theodore Henderson (Cold Spring, N.Y.) has clocked a time of 9:19.96 and should challenge McMorrow to the finish line. In the women’s event, Williams’ Emily Harris (Manchester, N.H.) has posted a top time of 11:09.97 this year.

In the men’s hurdles, Josh Etkind (New City, N.Y.) of Tufts is back to defend his title in the 110-meters after claiming first place in 2017 and 2018. He is the current NESCAC record holder in the event and owns the top time in 2019 (14.66). Sage Bailin (Amherst, Mass.) of Colby looks to do the same in the 400-meter hurdles as he enters the championship with the top time of 53.37. Colby’s Sophie Stokes Cerkvenik (Britt, Minn.) was last year’s runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles and has the best time in the event this season (14.41). Bowdoin’s Sara Ory (Saint Louis, Mo.) set a new NESCAC standard last year in the women’s 400-meter hurdles on her way to capturing the title. Caitlin Ubl (Norwood, N.J.) (1:03.08) of Williams, Stokes Cerkvenik (1:03.70) and Ory (1:03.99) own the top three times this season and are all within a second of each other.

In the jumps, a new champion will be crowned, but the runners-up in the high jump, the long jump, and the triple jump all return. Beufils Kimpolo-Pene (Bronx, N.Y.) of Bates finished second in the high jump and has one of the top three marks (1.95m), tying Bowdoin’s Joseph Staudt (North Andover, Mass.). Williams’ Ian Kagame (Kigali, Rwanda) leads the pack with a leap of 2.01 meters. In the women’s high jump, Williams’ Emma Egan (Yarmouth, Maine) was the runner-up last year and boasts the top height this year (1.75m) and looks to extend the Ephs’ streak of winning the event to four straight years. Matthew Mantega (North Andover, Mass.) of Tufts has the best mark in the men’s long jump this season (6.86m) following a runner-up performance in 2018. Williams’ Izabelle Ith (Petersburg, Alaska) won last year’s women’s long jump with a mark of 5.62 meters and has the second-best distance this season (5.53m). Middlebury’s Alex Cook (Kenilworth, Ill.) has produced the top distance at 5.55 meters. Amherst’s Jordan Edwards (Alexandria, Va.) placed second in the men’s triple jump last season and carries the top distance of 13.87 meters into the 2019 championship. Williams’ Kene Odenigbo (New Rochelle, N.Y.) has registered the top mark in the women’s triple jump at 11.49 meters and looks to stretch the Ephs’ streak of triple jump titles to three straight years.

Henry Hintermeister (North Berwick, Maine) of Tufts and Zach Smith (Waterville, Maine) of Bates return this year in the javelin after finishing first and third, respectively, last year. Hintermeister has logged a top throw of 57.01 meters, while Smith owns a mark of 53.17 meters. Bates’ Tyler Harrington (Haverhill, Mass.), the 2017 NESCAC Champion, checks in with the second-best mark this year at 54.78 meters. In the women’s javelin, Trinity’s Devan Walsh (Danvers, Mass.) placed third last season and owns the third-best throw this year (40.40m), behind Bowdoin’s Sophia Slovenski (Cape Neddick, Maine) (43.24m) and Middlebury’s Rebecca Gorman (Sudbury, Mass.) (42.25m). A new champion will be crowned in the men’s discus event, with Middlebury’s Zack Sieb (Randolph, N.J.) leading the field of competitors with a throw of 46.00 meters. Connecticut College’s Emily Senatore (Norwell, Mass.) returns to defend her title in the women’s discus and holds the top mark of 43.35 meters. Tufts’ Kevin Quisumbing (Los Angeles, Calif.), the runner-up in the shot put in 2018, enters the championship with the top mark in the men’s event at 15.72 meters. Koko Mensah (Orange, N.J.) of Connecticut College, the 2017 NESCAC Women’s Shot Put Champion, returns to the field and has the best mark this season at 14.40 meters. Defending champion Peace Kabari (Manchester, N.H.) of Trinity also returns to the field and ranks second among the top marks this year (14.25m). In the men’s hammer throw, Bates’ John Rex (Andover, Mass.) leads the field with a mark of 57.92 meters. In the women’s hammer throw Ivie Uzamere (White Plains, N.Y.) of Wesleyan has a top throw of 50.98 meters, while Tufts’ Evelyn Drake (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), the defending champion, ranks second (47.40m).

In the pole vault, Middlebury’s John Natalone (Dix Hills, N.Y.), who finished third last year after winning the event in 2017, enters the 2019 championship with the top mark in the event (4.88m). Williams Kelsie Hao (McLean, Va.) is the reigning champion in the women’s pole vault and has the best mark this season at 3.91 meters. Kreager Taber (Raleigh, N.C.) of Middlebury and Maggie Murphy (New Cumberland, Pa.) of Williams, last year’s second and third-place finishers also return and are tied for the next best height at 3.55 meters.

In the men’s relays, Middlebury captured first place in the 4x100 and 4x400 races last year. The top three teams, Tufts (42.06), Middlebury (42.42), and Bowdoin (42.50), are all within a half-second of each other. The Panthers are the three-time defending 4x400 champion and have the best time this season (3:17.83). Amherst claimed first in the 4x800 race a year ago, but Williams holds the top time at 7:58.95 this season. In the women’s relay races, Colby won the NESCAC title in the 4x100 and 4x800 races, while Middlebury claimed the title in the 4x400 relay. Williams boasts the top time in the 4x100 (47.84) and the 4x400 (3:51.59) relays, while Bowdoin has the top mark in 4x800 at 9:40.00.

The top three individual finishers and the top three relay teams will be considered All-Conference honorees in each event.
