MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Williams won its seventh NESCAC Women's Tennis Championship after a 5-2 win over Amherst (13-4) in a match played on Proctor Courts at Middlebury College. The top-seeded Ephs (20-0) earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will find out their fate when the selections are announced on Monday. The third-seeded Jeffs (14-3) are expected to get an at-large bid to the tournament.
Amherst led 1-0 after Rebecca Curran and Maya Hart defeated Sarah Monteagudo and Safi Aly 8-6 at #3 doubles. The Jeffs went ahead 2-0 at #1 singles when Vickie Ip and Sue Ghosh were 8-4 winners over Julia Cancio and Maria Pylypiv. Williams got on the board at #2 singles when Juli Raventos and Linda Shin were 8-6 victors over Jackie Calla and Maddy Sung.
The Ephs proceeded to win four straight-singles matches to capture the title. Williams knotted the match at 2-2 when Maria Gancayco topped Megan Adamo, 6-2, 6-1. Cancio followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Claire Carpenter at #6, before Shin put the Ephs on top 6-0, 6-2 in the third slot. The championship-clinching match came at #2 singles, where Raventos emerged with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ghosh.
