LEWISTON, Maine - Fifth-seeded Wesleyan University swept doubles play and won two of the first three decided singles matches to defeat fourth-seeded Bowdoin College Friday morning in the first round of the NESCAC Women's Tennis Championship. It is Wesleyan's first victory, in its third appearance, in the 17-year history of the tournament.

Wesleyan (11-4) advances to play top-seeded Williams (16-3) at 9 a.m. in the tournament semifinals.

The same teams met one year ago with the same seedings, and Bowdoin emerged with a 5-4 victory.

The Cardinals seized a 3-0 lead in doubles. Victoria Yu and Aashli Budhiraja started it off with an 8-3 victory over Kyra Silitch and Tess Trinka at second doubles. Eudice Chong and Helen Klass-Warch registered an 8-5 win over Joulia Likhanskaia and Tiffany Cheng at first doubles while Nicole McCann and Danica Dubinski defeated Pilar Geffenig and Maddie Rolph 8-5.

The No. 1 singles matchup reprised the 2015 NCAA Division III singles championship match between Chong and Likhanskaia, with Chong coming away with a 6-2, 6-1 victory to make it 4-0 in Wesleyan's favor.

Needing to sweep the remaining five singles matches to win, Bowdoin earned a point at third singles, with Silitch defeating Klass-Warch 6-3, 6-3. But the Cardinals iced the victory minutes later, as Budhiraja finished off Trinka 6-2, 6-3 at fourth singles.
