Williams Wins 2001 Volleyball Championship

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Williams defeated top seeded Wesleyan 3-2 this afternoon to win the NESCAC Championship. The second-seeded Ephs earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship tournament.

The Cardinals took an early lead, winning the first game 30-26 without ever allowing the Ephs to gain the lead. Wesleyan led throughout much of the second game until Williams took an 18-17 lead, going on to defeat the Cardinals 30-26. Although the third game saw a lot of back and forth action, Wesleyan went ahead to win 30-21. The Ephs jumped out to a 20-9 lead in game four and kept up the strong pace to win 30-15. In the fifth and final set, Williams jumped out early with a 14-3 lead. The Cardinals fought back but the Ephs stayed strong to win the set 15-7.

The Ephs were led by Akilah Rogers who had nine blocks and Carmel Lyons who had four service aces and 17 digs. Also leading Williams were Margaret Demment with 32 assists and Joyia Chadwick with 21 kills and seven blocks. Pacing the Cardinals with 26 kills and six blocks was Eliza Allen. Defensively, Wesleyan was led by senior Laura Cox who had 24 digs. Christina Fucci totaled 58 assists through the five games while Alexis Keeler had 21 kills.
