2011 Volleyball Players of the Week

November 7 - Sophia Cornew, Bowdoin (Sophomore, Setter - Portola Valley, Calif.)
Cornew led a balanced attack for the Polar Bears during their run through the 2011 NESCAC Volleyball Championship, Bowdoin’s first title. Cornew, who has played every point for the Polar Bears this season, averaged 10.9 assists per set while also averaging 3.3 digs and 1.3 kills. During a 3-1 win over Trinity in the semifinals on Saturday, Cornew had 40 assists to go with 13 digs, six kills, and two blocks. In Sunday’s title match against Middlebury, Cornew had 38 assists and 10 digs.

October 31 - Co-Players of the Week
Lauren Antion, Amherst 
(First Year, MB - Los Angeles, Calif.)
During a 3-0 week for the Jeffs, which included a 3-2 win over Williams, Antion averaged 4.36 kills and hit at a .438 rate while also contributing 1.18 blocks per set. In Friday’s come-from-behind win over the Ephs, Antion had 18 kills, eight blocks, and seven digs while hitting .316.

Izzy Kuhel, Tufts (First Year, MB/OPP - Brisbane, Calif.)
Kuhel averaged 2.47 kills and 1.2 blocks per set while posting a .433 hitting percentage during a 4-0 week for the Jumbos, which included a 3-2, come-from-behind win at Connecticut College on Friday. Against the Camels on Friday, Kuhel was in on seven blocks and contributed eight kills.

October 24 - Anna Brown, Hamilton (First Year, L/DS - Colorado Springs, Colo.)
Brown earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Continental Classic over the weekend by averaging 5.00 digs per set and committing just three errors over 61 receptions (.951), as Hamilton went 4-0 to win the tournament. During Friday’s 3-1 victory over Trinity, the Continentals’ first over the Bantams since 1993, Brown had 28 digs. She added in five assists and four aces over the four matches.

October 17 - Kendall Lord, Tufts (Junior, Setter - La Jolla, Calif.)
Lord was the catalyst for the Jumbos’ offense during a 3-0 week, as she averaged 10.5 assists per set over 12 sets and contributed 10 service aces. On defense, Lord also averaged 2.83 digs and 1.00 blocks per set. During a 3-2 victory at Trinity on Saturday, Lord had 54 assists, 18 digs, five blocks, and three aces. The night before against Wesleyan, Lord contributed 34 assists, five digs, four blocks, and three aces.

October 10 - Kristin Hanczor, Bowdoin (Senior, Middle Blocker - Redding, Conn.)
Hanczor led the Polar Bears to a pair of NESCAC wins over the weekend, as Bowdoin remained in the top spot in the conference standings as the only unbeaten team in league play. She averaged 3.11 kills and 1.22 blocks per set with a .397 hitting percentage over the two wins. In a historic 3-2, come-from-behind win over Williams - the first-ever victory for Bowdoin over the Ephs - Hanczor had 17 kills and four blocks with a .412 attack percentage to help the Polar Bears rally from an 0-2 deficit.

October 3 - Claire Miller, Williams (First Year, Outside Hitter - Wilmette, Ill.)
Miller tallied double-digit kills in all four of the Ephs’ wins last week, including three double-double performances in kills and digs, as she averaged 3.56 kills and 4.25 digs per set with a .228 hitting percentage. In Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Trinity, the Bantams’ first NESCAC setback of the season, Miller had a team-high 17 kills and also contributed 30 digs. She also had 17 kills in a 3-1 win over Union on Tuesday.

September 26 - Amy Newman, Connecticut College (Senior, Outside Hitter - Los Angeles, Calif.)
Newman led the Camels to a second-place showing at the MIT Invitational, earning All-Tournament Team honors during a 3-1 week by averaging 4.75 kills and 2.69 digs per set while hitting at a .287 rate. She recorded a double-double in kills and digs in three of the four matches. On Friday evening, Newman had 25 kills and 11 digs with a .364 attack percentage in a 3-1 win before netting 26 kills and nine digs in a 3-2 decision over Frostburg St.

September 19 - Amy Newman, Connecticut College (Senior, Outside Hitter - Los Angeles, Calif.)
Newman averaged 5.0 kills and 2.8 digs per set while hitting at a .336 rate in a 2-1 week that featured a 3-1 win over Williams and a 3-0 victory over Hamilton. Newman opened the week with 13 kills and six digs in a setback at Roger Williams on Tuesday. She followed with 17 kills and 16 digs during Friday’s match against the Ephs, then posted a season-best 20 kills and six digs in Saturday’s decision over the Continentals.

September 12 - Co-Players of the Week
Kristin Hanczor, Bowdoin (Senior, Middle Blocker - Redding, Conn.)
Hanczor averaged 3.13 kills and 1.00 blocks per set while hitting at a .481 rate as the Polar Bears went 3-1 at the Endicott Invitational. Named to the All-Tournament Team, Hanczor led her squad in kills in three out of four matches. She had 17 kills and a program-record 12 blocks (five solo) in a 3-2 win over St. Mary’s on Saturday.

Hannah Brickley, Trinity (Sophomore, Outside Hitter - Melrose, Mass.)
Brickley averaged 4.10 kills and 4.30 digs per set with a .299 hitting percentage during a 3-0 showing at the Brandeis Invitational over the weekend. Brickley posted double-digit kills against Rhode Island College (17), Babson (10), and Haverford (14). In addition, Brickley recorded three service aces for the Bantams.
